I ntentional, minimal, serene. The Milan home of Japanese designer Tsukasa Goto and Italian architect Elena Naldi is a perfect reflection of the owners themselves.

Built in the early 1970s on the northern edge of Milan’s centre, the Brutalist high-rise building was designed by Gabriele D’Alì and Giacomo Scarpini and sits atop a villa that had originally been conceived by Scarpini for his parents. In their original project, Scarpini and D’Alì brought friends together to create living spaces that acted as empty ‘containers’ to be filled with the energy of their distinct private lives, while also catalysing close-knit relationships between the inhabitants through the building’s layout and structure. Then, as now, the ‘villa with overlapping tower’, as it came to be known by locals, was D’Alì and Scarpini’s answer to increasingly fragmented, frenetic and isolated big-city life.

Inside Goto and Naldi’s home today, natural light streams in through floor-to-ceiling windows, enveloping the space with a luminous calm. The space had been left standing open for years, and new life was breathed into it when the couple moved in seven years ago. ‘When we first walked into the apartment, I was immediately struck by how much natural light there was. We connected almost instantly with the space because of its light,’ Naldi recalls. ’And now that we live in it, light is a constant throughout our day, from morning until night. It’s almost as though it fuels the light of our family, glowing from the inside out like a paper lantern.’

Goto and Naldi chose to maintain the original layout, which places the spacious living room at the centre of the house. Some of the features that were conceived when the apartment was built, such as beds shaped out of concrete and a doorless main bedroom, were maintained, while elements of Japanese design were integrated into each room, not least the myriad pieces designed by Goto himself.
The home overlooks the treetops in the park that surrounds the building, so nature can be seen from most areas. Parquet flooring and a quiet, neutral colour palette background the items designed and produced by Goto as well as other carefully selected pieces that work with the minimal aesthetic. ‘Each product I designed was created based on the materials and the product’s function, reflecting our desire to only have things that are essential to our lives,’ he says. It’s a philosophy that is evident in everything from the pared-down kitchen stools by Alvar Aalto to the table centrepiece Goto made from discarded pieces of marble.
Above all, the couple think of their home as a nest from which their two young daughters, Agata and Anita, can always see nature. The space embodies the values they seek to impart to their offspring and celebrates the rich heritage of their Japanese and Italian roots. Respectful of the building’s past and of its architects’ intentions, the home is a haven that invites repose, reflection and a respect for what is and will be.

Small flower arrangements sit side by side on longline vases of marble and wood:
each one describes a phase of the transformations that the flower goes through during its life.
From bud to withering, delicate architectures of stems represent all stages of their life cycle.
Made of wood and marble, respectively, in Japan and Italy, these two vases designed by Tsukasa Goto are also
representative of the path of Green Wise, which connects Tokyo and Milan through the two locations of its activity.

This collection is the result of the materials’ transition: from decorative to essential shape. The borosilicate element has two types of section: one smooth and one with a striped interior. Combining the two types of profiles, following a rhythm of 1/2 or 1/3, it has been defined an horizon line overlaid to the water line. With placing together all the collection elements, it possibile define a landscape of different heights and a light weave between the decorative world and the essential world.Glasses are impalpable elements. The horizontal edge, at the point of joining of the two different profiles, allows the overlapping of the elements and become an anti-slip for the hand.

This container, small enough to fit comfortably in the palm of the hand, still manifests a logical, functional and simple beauty. Created with the aesthetic sense passed down throughout the history of Japanese traditional crafts fully in mind, conceptualised from a stylishness that demonstrates the maker’s enjoyment as a craftsman, offering the ability for a single object to be used for many different purposes and the lightness and portability that allows it to be taken anywhere, attention is even paid to areas that will never be seen.
The bowl-shaped part on the top level uses yosegi woodwork. To achieve this look, the craftsman had to develop a range of home-made blades and jigs to shape the traditional yabanemon arrow-feather designs, where all the wood grain runs diagonally, into a round shape, then using a technique to pull it in towards the inner side to create a yosegi technique that has never been seen before.
The middle level uses retractions from the inner side around the circumference to ensure that it retains its strength as a container while still allowing the slits to be used in the design. The bottom level is a radical new design that incorporates the circumferential yosegi parquetry diagonally.
The entire item is a tastefulness that we who live in the modern age, in a fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, sense subconsciously as beautiful, created by a master turner from Kyoto.
Anyone who handles this item will find the memories of their ancestors who lived harmoniously with wood that are engraved subconsciously in their spiritual memories reawakened from the soothing lines, warmth, feeling, and scent of hinoki; and their minds will no doubt turn to the role of craftsmen in passing on the aesthetics and traditional techniques down to the future.

By adding a selection of natural materials in the grey universe of cement, the designer aims to eliminate dull aspects of consturction material such as architectural glass or marble. The characteristics of natural material found in texture and colors of flower petals or plants seeds destroy the fixed images of concrete and gives new life to the inorganic material. Poetic imaginations and fantasies may arise when colors are casted into the grey world. The imagery far from the reality just may be what we need right now. By configuring the ordinary things that surrounds us, the designer hopes to express the feeling and joy of vision and sensibility.

objects should always have a story, because it is this history which define beauty and materiality.
as well each marble layer is a memory of a passage as well this table wants to tell a story.
